U.S. Veteran

Giles Manning Lowe, 83, of Deerfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on January 17, 2013 in Libertyville, IL. Born February 5, 1929 in Adrian, GA to Bertha, nee Toole, and Henry Lowe. Giles was patriotic and proud of serving his country and retiring in 1967 as a Master Chief in the United States Navy. He leaves behind many friends in Mission, TX, where he and Helen lived for many years. Giles received great joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He often said to many, “All grandchildren are great grandchildren”, and relished being called “the old grouch” by his grandchildren, who fully acknowledged that he was anything but. He loved exploring and playing on his computer, especially with Google Earth, working crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy. We miss him so much. Beloved husband of the late Helen, nee Akima (Wahea) from Wailua, HI; loving father of Susan (Jim) Versino and Henry (Barbara) Nehls-Lowe; cherished grandfather of Nicholas (Melissa) Versino, Malia (Matthew) Stern, Anthony (Gabrielle) Versino, Jonathan Versino, Taylor Versino, Amanda (Oliver Kiefer) Nehls-Lowe and Abigail Nehls Lowe; adored great-grandfather of Hannah, Aiden, Ashley, Ethan and Colette; dear step-father of Helena (Al) Alvarado, Edward (Sandra) Akima, Harry Akima, Joseph (Fusae) Akima and Clayton Akima; loving step-grandfather of many grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; and his Hawaiian “ohana” always had a special place in his heart and life. Service and interment private.
