Konrad H.O. Buehring

Konrad H.O. Buehring, 77, of Schaumburg, passed away January 5, 2013. He was born April 22, 1935 in Schwarza, Germany. His parents were Bertha, nee Kuckelkorn and Walter Buerhing. Upon graduation, Konrad decided to join the Merchant Marine. In the summer of 1951, he joined a group of boys that all were to be trained as seamen. Upon the completion of training Konrad sailed on the Passat, Greiffenfels, Doride, T/S Ludwigshafen and T/S Heidelberg. In 1958 he graduated from the Nautical College of Bremen and obtained the license A5, allowing him to sail as Officer on any vessel, anywhere in the world. On February 17, 1958 Konrad enrolled on the Motor-Ship Hamburg as 3rd officer and was promoted to 2nd officer shortly after. On May 18, 1959 he was asked to enroll on the T/S Hanseatic, a huge passenger ship that sailed round trip from Hamburg to New York. It was on his last of six round trips that he met Charlotte and fell in love. They were married in Hamburg on November 13, 1959 and relocated to the United States. Charlotte worked for a bank and German radio station while Konrad was employed with United States Navigation Co. They had their first and only child, Ursula, on September 16, 1962. Konrad later worked as an export manager for Jantzen International Freight Forwarding which later became BVT America and for Rotra, Inc. where he stayed until his retirement in 2000. Beloved husband of the late Charlotte; loving father of Ursula (Craig Booth); cherished grandfather of Charlotte (Marcie), Christel, Robert and David and Jake and Jerry Doppke; dear great-grandfather of Thomas, Noah and Trinity. He is also survived by Ingrid, Thomas and Kevin Heinrich. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 12 pm until time of memorial service 1 pm at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd., Highland Park, IL. Interment private.
